In a significant political development, three senators from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), increasing the APC’s majority in the Senate to 68 members.

The three defecting senators are all from Kebbi State:

• Senator Adamu Aliero (Kebbi Central)
• Senator Yahaya Abdullahi (Kebbi North)
• Senator Garba Maidoki (Kebbi South)

Their defection was officially announced during Tuesday’s plenary session, where the Deputy Senate President, Barau Jibrin, read their separate letters of defection. The senators cited the prolonged leadership crisis within the PDP, marked by unresolved litigations and internal divisions, as the primary reason for their decision to switch parties.

Sources revealed that the trio met with President Bola Tinubu behind closed doors at the Presidential Villa in Abuja last Friday. The meeting, which was also attended by APC National Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje, Kebbi State Governor Nasir Idris, Sokoto State Governor Ahmad Aliyu, and Minister of Budget and Economic Planning Atiku Bagudu, reportedly finalized their plans to join the ruling party.

During the Senate session, the Deputy Senate President congratulated the senators on their decision to align with the ruling party’s vision. Prominent APC leaders, including Ganduje and Governor Idris, were present to welcome them.

This defection further solidifies the APC’s dominance in the Senate and is expected to impact the legislative dynamics in the National Assembly.
